Something Blue: 7 perfectly pretty ideas

7 perfectly pretty ways to do your ‘Something Blue’

Something Old?’ Check. ‘Something New?’ Easy. ‘Something Borrowed?’ Sorted. So what about your Something Blue? Personally I’m finding this one bit bit more of a challenge. I love how Geri Halliwell’s daughter Bluebell was her Something Blue at her recent wedding to F1 boss Christian Horner. I’m almost there: my daughter is Betsy Boo, not Betsy Blue. I suppose there is always Deed poll….

Now according to tradition, Something Blue is supposed to symbolise purity, love and fidelity. Doesn’t that make opting for a garter as so many brides do seem a bit too, er, raunchy…? I’m definitely going down the beauty route to sort my Something Blue. I thought I’d share my ideas so far….

1 Blue perfume

Oscar De La Renta Something Blue, from £60
I was working on a wedding mag when this fragrance launched back in 2013. I felt it my duty to give it a spritz and was knocked scentless (geddit?) by how its fruity first hit warmed to a soft ‘come hither’ floral. It’s crammed full of white flowers – Stephanotis, a flower often picked for bouquets along with lily of the valley, neroli and narcisse. Back then my sister wore it as her own ‘Something Blue.’ Could this be the beginnings of a family tradition….? You can sniff it out from

LA LAQUE COUTURE

2 Blue nails

YSL La Laque Couture in Bleu Majorelle, £19
I’m a BIG fan blue nail varnish and can vouch for the utter gorgeousness of this creamy true blue. Denim digits are a brave choice for your Big Day but as far as toes go, I reckon blue’s the hue! They’ll look super cute peeping out of open toe shoes (and even better dipping into the pool come the honeymoon.)

EYE-PALETTE

3 Blue smoke

MAC Eye Shadow x 9: Navy Times Nine, £30
The perfect palette to score you a sexy sapphire smoky eye. Pick ’n’ mix the textures (satin, frost and matte) and shades (from sky blue to stormy.) Oh, and if you’ve got brown or hazel eyes opting for ‘ole blue eyes’ via your eyeshadow will look A-mazing!

Something-Blue-Hair-Clip

4 Blue hair comb

Glitzy Secrets Something Blue Hair Clip, £16.50
Here’s a pretty way to DIY your wedding day do (that’s decorate it yourself.) It’s small, sparkly with just a hint of something blue…. I’m taking it to my hair trials.

Kitsch-Flower-Tattoos-purple

Blue tattoos

Kitsch Flower Metallic Tattoo, £8.08
A little blue butterfly hovering at the bottom of your spine or a sprinkling of cornflowers around your ankle….. I originally bought these tattoos for my flower girls but just might snaffle one for myself…. They’re so delicate and look really pretty on.

Super-Colour-Mascara

6 Blue lashes

Kiko Super Colour Mascara in Blue, £5.90
Some years ago a make-up artist friend told me that to really make your eyes ‘pop’ you should swap black mascara for navy. Apparently it’ll make the whites of your eyes bling out (so long as a lack of sleep caused by excitement, nerves or a last late night as a single girl doesn’t scupper their chances!) I love that this one ups your batting average too. Bambi eat your heart out!

Eyeliner

7 Blue eyes

Barry M Bold Waterproof Eyeliner in Blue, £3.99
I’m a sucker for Givenchy make-up and am absolutely loving the look of a smudgy line of turquoise along my lower lash line surrounded by mascara’d lashes. It takes barely any time to apply and is bang on trend. Y’see I told you, blue’s the hue! That’ll be an ‘eye do’ from me!

So how are you planning to incorporate your Something Blue into your big day? Have you any other suggestions for me? I’d love to know…

  • So two years ago I went to a festival. Feeling fabulously boho with my temporary flower tattoos, floppy hat and ankle boots I met a guy and well, let’s just say we shared more than just a tent…. Fast forward to this summer and we’re getting married. It’s a traditional church service so tattoos wouldn’t be appropriate. However your post has given me a great idea. I remember him making saucy comments about flowers and growing. I think I’m gonna stick my something blue somewhere that only he will see….. Cxx
