As soon as I saw this asymmetric Berta Privee gown I fell hook, line and sinker in love. It’s got everything I crave in a wedding gown: an unexpected fabric, a sexy body-skimming sheath, a slashed-to-the-thigh skirt and best of all, a single shoulder neckline. It’s untraditional, elegant and eye-catching for all the right reasons.
Plus, as a girl who likes to show a bit of shoulder, I know it’ll stop me slouching. I know that when I wear a strapless dress in the summer I stand and walk taller. But strapless wedding dresses are so… expected. A one-shoulder one is way more modern. Asymmetric is definitely having a moment too. Just look at Julia Roberts who opted for the single shoulder look to both the Oscars and the Golden Globes this year. Proof enough, that as erogenous zones go, they don’t come much sexier.
So this post is all about celebrating your shoulder. Yep, just the one. Scroll down for a few more frocks to tantalise and delight plus a little bit of beauty advice because if you are going to show it … flaunt it!
The best beauty regime is about putting in as little effort as possible. Every morning since I can remember, I’ve taken the laziest approach to skin buffing by simply combining body wash with a pair of exfoliating mitts. My quest for smooth, glowing skin (or shoulders in this case) is now further helped by sleeping under a layer of This Works Sleep Plus Dream Body, £25. The cream (that smells beyond btw) is laced with retinol to help make ‘bacne,’ pigmentation patches and dull skin over time look way, way better. You may be close to the end of the tube before you notice a difference but your skin will seem more glow-y, I promise. Just use an spf body cream during the day as you normally would if you’re wearing something skimpy.

If there’s one beauty product I’d credit for giving me a body confidence boost, it’s fake tan. Sitting pretty half-empty on my bathroom shelf at the moment is Fake Bake’s Flawless Self Tan Liquid, £24.95. I really like how easy it is to apply (it even comes with a mitt), the Caribbean fragrance and of course how I stay a streak-free zone! Obviously, if you’re diy-ing your tan, do it no later than the day before your big day. Then, all you need is a little hint of golden sparkle on your shoulders. Since it first launched yonks ago, I’ve never been too far away from a bottle of Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Or, £21.50. Just drop a tiny bit in your palms and smooth on before you step into your dress for the subtlest champagne sheen.
This exercise will work your shoulders in all directions. Stand with your knees slightly bent holding the opposite ends of one dumbbell in each hand. Raise the dumbbell to chest level, keeping your arms straight and core strong. Hold for a count of 5 then bend your arms and move the dumbbell behind your head in a circular motion until your arms are back in the starting position. Continue for 12 reps then repeat in the other direction. Once you’ve mastered that, try doing it with one foot off the floor. It’s not easy but it feels good and is worth the effort to look your best in your single shoulder-flaunting dress.
